Ever wondered “What’s that bird?” Here’s your chance to learn the basics of bird identification at afun and interactive sessiom from 7pm on Wednesday 5th June in Ashprington Village Hall.
Sustainable Ashprington is a lively group of people who are encouraging small, local action that involves the community to increase biodiversity and decrease carbon use. Our group is part of a busy wider network across the South Hams, Sustainable South Hams. Since we were set up two years ago we have focused on making a practical difference including a workshop to build bird and bat boxes, a share stall for spare plants, seeds and produce, and patrols protecting toads on their breeding migration routes. We have joined in Devon wide scientific activity with a survey of our bats, and with monitoring of the quality of the river Dart. We have organised some fascinating talks on local wildlife including bat identification and gardening for wildlife, and on easy ways we can all calculate and reduce our carbon footprint. We have organised visits to Sharpham rewilding, Sharpham gardens and an agroforestry site. We have a small committee that meets every two months, and new members are most welcome, and we publicise our activities which are free and open to all on Facebook, in the parish magazine and postering around the parish.
Our next public event is on 5th June at 7pm: the “What’s that bird?” talk in Ashprington Village Hall. It is by Mike Langham, a professional wildlife guide, formerly at the RSPB. He aims to improve our birding and observational skills in an entertaining and interactive way. The last talk on bats was fascinating and we struggled to end the lively questions! So do come and support. We would love to hear from anyone with thoughts and suggestions, especially if you have any time and energy to help the group in small or larger ways. We are a friendly and non ideological bunch who always have the kettle on.
