Fifty years ago the three parishes were gripped by one of the worst winters of the century. Icy east winds brought snow from December to March, drifts filled the road from Ashprington to Totnes for over six weeks and water pipes froze. Electricity was constantly off and sheep and ponies on the moor were fed by helicopter. Villagers remembered the terrible winter of 1947 and complained that 1963 was longer.
