The Ashprington & Tuckenhay Defibrillator Supporters Group are encouraging local residents to take part in a free Cardiac Arrest Response training event on Monday 9th May at Ashprington Village Hall.
It is now five years since we first installed defibrillators in Tuckenhay (outside of the Maltsters Arms) and in Ashprington (in the telephone kiosk opposite the Durant Arms). With over two years of the pandemic, rising waiting lists and very long ambulance waiting times, we feel it is very important to offer further training to villagers.
A Cardiac Arrest Response Seminar run by the Community Heartbeat Trust has been arranged in Ashprington Village Hall on Monday 9th May at 18:30. Residents from both villages are urged to attend. The two hour session is FREE having been funded by Ashprington and Tuckenhay Parish Council and Cornworthy Parish Council.
The following will be covered:
- What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest
- 5 minutes to save a life
- Physiology of the heart
- How to recognise Sudden Cardiac Arrest
- How to dial 999
- What to expect
- Questions you will be asked
- How to do CPR and why
- How to use our AEDs (defibrillators)
- Recovery position / turning a patient
- Handover to the Paramedics
- Governance and support programes
We will also include an update on the Volunteer Emergency Telephone Service (VETs). For new residents, this is a telephone scheme that after dialing 999 first you can use to assist you in an emergency with giving CPR, collecting a defibrillator and bringing it to the casualty or just providing moral support in the event of a suspected Cardiac Arrest. The number for this is 01803 500535. Keep the number in a place where you can find it but always phone 999 before calling VETs. We will be asking for more VETS volunteers in Tuckenhay, where we have several vacancies.
The Cardiac Arrest Response training session is FREE to Parishioners of Ashprington, Tuckenhay and Cornworthy, and has been funded by our respective Parish Councils, but we will be asking for donations to the Support Group funds and The Community Heartbeat Trust.
